Painswick

Today's outing took us to Painswick. Another "cute little town" in the Cotswolds. Back in wool's heyday for the region, Painswick was a bustling and important wool town. Evidence can be seen in the fancy tabletop tombs around the church of St Mary. (Similar to how Glasgow's importance in Victorian times is evident in the monuments and tombs at the Necropolis) Here are a bunch of photos from today.

Deddington Farmer's Market

A few photos I took this morning in Deddington while I was at the farmer's market there getting some good cheese.

St. Mary's and Radcliffe Camera

Today's walk in town included a trip up the tower at St Mary the Virgin to get a good view of Radcliffe Camera and the surrounding colleges. Today's weather was cooperative and the line wasn't very long. Once I made it up on the platform of the tower, I realized why they closely monitor and limit the number of people going up at any one time. The viewing area is a very tight squeeze on the tower itself and the last little bit of spiral stairs isn't very roomy either. Overall though, I found that I liked the view here better than the view from Carfax Tower, which is just about 2 blocks away.

Winchester Cathedral

is one of my favorite Crosby Stills & Nash songs. Sunday we went for a visit. I didn't find the grave of a soldier that died in 1799, but I did find one from 1899...

Brasilia During Carnaval

isn't quite the party like Rio...but as a relatively recently "created" city (only a year older than me), it is known for it's modern architecture. Brasilia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Salisbury

A couple of weeks ago we went out for our first day trip. Elesa had picked Salisbury. Salisbury is a fairly compact town so we figured it wouldn't be too much walking, in what we anticipated would be rain.

After making use of the Park & ride (I'm a fan!), we walked through the market, bought some berries much cheaper than here in Oxford. Then we spent time in the Parish Church of St Thomas and St Edmund, which has a unique wooden roof with interesting carvings and also some neat paintings. Next we went to the cathedral which I really liked. I took a lot of photos there. The added benefits of visiting Salisbury were the nearby ruins of Old Sarum, the original settlement. We stopped there for an hour or so. Then in the late afternoon on the way home, we did a drive-by of Stonehenge, which is just a few miles away and easily seen from the road.

If you want to see all 56 of the photos that made the cut. I put a totally, as yet unannotated, slide show of them on photobucket, HERE.
