The Camera You Have With You

Photographers are frequently asked:
What is the best camera?
There are at least as many answers as there are photographers, but without getting into a long back and forth discussion such as ...
"well, what type of photography do you want to do?"
"how will the photos be used? printed?(how big?), posted online???"
"what's your experience level?"
"what's your budget?"
"have you tried some camera's out to see if you like their feel, menus etc?"
"do you plan on using software such as Photoshop/Lightroom to process your own photos?"
and so on.

And then some people buy an expensive (to them) camera and become reluctant to take it out...it's too big and heavy, it's too noticable, it might get wet, it might get sand in it, it might get stolen or maybe I'll get robbed...

And so the common cliché response is:
"The one you have with you!"

And it's true to a great extent. If you don't have a camera, you can't take a photo. These days, most people have a cell phone that can take nice photos in most situations. I have an iPhone 15. I am now in the habit of making sure I take a photo with it when I'm dealing with difficult lighting, even when I am primarily shooting with my DLSR. My iPhone takes photos that are generally good enough for posting online. In many difficult lighting circumstances, it does better than a DLSR if you're not willing to use a tripod and spend some time on the computer to process the images.

So that is generally my answer to the question.
"What is the best camera?"

Below are 4 photos taken pretty much at the same time, a landscape orientation and a portrait orientation from both my Canon 6D DLSR and my iPhone 15. All have been processed to some extent using Lightroom.

Spring and Summer Arrive Earlier and Earlier

I've been taking photos of flowers, bugs etc consistently since I retired and moved here permanently 7 years ago. At least for south western Ohio, the Ohio River valley outside of Cincinnati, spring and summer seem to be arriving earlier and earlier. Here are photos I've taken in the past few days. Hellebores have been blooming since at least Feb 1 and are still going strong. Many daffodils are still blooming whie the grape hyacinth are at their peak. The tulips and woodland poppies are blooming a week earlier than they've ever bloomed before. Today I noticed some iris about to bloom (a good freeze will kill them). I know 7 years is an inadequate sample in the scheme of things, but it's still a sample that gets one thinking.

Spring is Here (At least for now)

Still way behind on the photo work. We went on a long 2+ week "iconic American road trip" to Phoenix and back. (via Omaha;) ) .
It's taking me a lot of time to do the selecting from the resulting 1200+ images, not to mention then processing them.
But there were clearly signs of spring upon our return. Helleborus went from a few blooms when we left, to dozens and dozens. All the while, crocus and daffodils were following shortly thereafter.

Columbines

Columbines are one of my favorite spring flowers. I like their delicate look and the layers of petals.

"AI" in Photography

Back after a month's hiatus. It was a very busy month.

AI (Artificial Intelligence) is all the rage right now.
LLM (Large Language Models) such as OpenAI's ChatGPT are in the news, and poised to change the world by writing about anything and everything, responding to our queries etc.
Image making is no different with text->image AI programs such as DALL-E, Stable Diffusion and Midjourney being used to create unique images.

AI is also playing a larger and larger role in photography, not just in creating images, but in the image processing. Adobe's Photoshop and Lightroom have had AI assisted selections for masking, such as selecting the subject, the sky or an object for a while now. This allows for quicker adjustments to exposure, color etc for specific areas in the photo.

The latest version of Lightroom added AI to noise reduction (under the "Details" section). I thought I'd try it out on a photo I took the other day. It's not a "noisy" photo to begin with, but the "Enhance" option with it's default settings did a nice job on interior parts of the iris.

A Daffodil

Because there are days, or parts of days, when it does seem like spring around here.

I Like Harsh Light

I can not lie. I'm intrigued by the harsh shadows, the forms, the contrast, the backlight possibilities...
Yesterday it touched 80° here, so we'll call it spring, winter will be back again sometime in April, summer may pay a visit at anytime. The Ohio River valley offers an endless supply of weather surprises.

A Morning Walk

A bit around Valley View this morning. Peaceful, the birds didn't seem to be complaining about the April snow.
