"Thinking" in Black and White

One thing that's changed for me in the digital age is...I'm not stuck with the film that's loaded in the camera. That means it's more difficult to "think" in black and white. But, not only do I not have black and white film loaded, I haven't chosen a filter (Red, Yellow. whatever) nor do I need to decide the film development/processing when I get in the lab.

All that (and more) can be done these days in the software processing. I still occassionally "think" in black and white, but more often, I bring a photo up on my computer and I say to myself "Hey, that will look good as black and white." Of course then I have to chose the filter, the development, the equivalent of the paper...and so on. It quickly becomes a paradox of choice.

Lately I've been going through some old photos and I've immediately thought..."that's black and white." I still had to chose the software equivalent of filters, processing, paper etc, but I was at least starting out with a vision. Here are some of these photos.

A Day in Dubrovnik

Lot of links in this one...could keep the curious among my many readers quite busy...

Although we ended up going back a number of times, the first trip we took to Dubrovnik in late January of 2007 was one of our last as the original 5...the weather was great and we had a good time. My original blog entry was Here.
I took a huge number of photos that day as did Ryan and Shelby.

A later trip to Croatia that included a stop in Dubrovnik I also blogged Here and put a slideshow of our friends' entire visit on photobucket. At least one other trip to Dubrovnik didn't even warrant a mention in the blog.

I've been trying to organize things lately and when I started keywording the photos from that time period... (and ironically, I blogged about my lack of organization with regards to my photographs using a photo from this original trip Here) I realized how many I liked that were taken in just that one day. So I processed a bunch of them over the past few days and here is a sample of the results.... the entire slideshow can be seen on photobucket, I've still have a few to add, and the photos haven't been captioned yet....that may be asking too much of me...enjoy.

Need to Get Some "DAM" Organization

Digital Asset Management that is. I've read THE book and thought a lot about it, but I still haven't organized my photos very well. I've done some key wording; deleted a relative few total waste of bits; backed up everything at least once...but when it comes to going back and finding things, my filing and naming system is pretty weak. And I have no internal rating system at all.

Tonight I just went wandering through photos taken after the first of the year looking for photos I liked but haven't worked on yet (there's where a rating system could help). I came across this one from our trip to Dubrovnik during Ryan's visit.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Just got back a few hours ago from spending a weekend in Dubrovnik, Croatia. It is another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its pretty empty this time of year, but I can imagine it is packed during the summer vacation months. Took HEAPS of photos, here's a real quick look at a few.
